What It Is: A plain-jane, white-colored 2015 Ford Mustang
coupe—a GT, by the looks of those “5.0” fender badges—wearing some tape and christened with a Michigan manufacturer license plate. It also happens to pack more than a few retro design cues that lead us to believe it’s a Mustang 50th Anniversary edition prototype. This limited-production release will commemorate the pony car’s golden jubilee soon after it goes on sale this year, and apparently it will do so by looking back to the car’s early days
Why It Matters: As if the launch of an all-new Mustang wasn’t a big enough deal, the 2015 Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary model will throw more metaphorical phosphorous on the metaphorical fire. In all likelihood, the retro-themed model also was created to assuage more-traditional Mustang buyers who feel there is too much “new” in the 2015 Mustang’s design

Platform: The only differences between the regular 2015 Mustang and this special-edition model that we can pick out are cosmetic: The grille gets a sweet ’60s–style “pony in a corral” badge, and this prototype’s rear quarter-window tape job suggests some old-school louvers are destined for the location. It appears the 50th Anniversary gear will include some performance mods, such as the Brembo brakes hiding behind this test mule’s blacked-out wheels, but this also could just be a pairing of the special-edition gear with a nicely optioned V-8–powered Mustang coupe. We don’t see why Ford couldn’t apply the limited-edition treatment to the Mustang convertible, but none were caught testing by our spy photographers, so we’ll have to wait and see whether a topless model appears
Powertrain: We expect the 50th Anniversary package to adorn the V-8–powered Mustang GT coupe, but we see no reason it couldn’t also be paired with the 2015 Stang’s V-6 or EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder engines. A slight horsepower bump for any involved engine
could be in the works, but it likely would be minimal
Estimated Arrival and Price: We suspect the 50th Anniversary Mustang will bow at the New York auto show next month, where the original pony car debuted 50 years ago. Look for a price premium for the privilege, perhaps between $1000 and $2000, if not more, over the 2015 Mustang’s expected low-$20,000 base price
